ARTIFICIAL PACEMAKER

It the normal pacemaker of the heart, i.e., sinoatrial node becomes damaged or diseased and the pacing rate becomes very slow (only 20-35 beats per minute), the blood flow to the brain becomes insufficient. Under such conditions, normal heart rhythm can be restored and maintained by surgically implanting an artificial device. This sends out small electrical currents to stimulate the heart to contract, known as artificial pacemaker.

Heart Transplant -In 1967, a human heart was transplanted by Dr. Christian Bernard in Cape Town (South Africa), First permanent mechanical heart/artificial heart, designed by Dr. Robert Jarvik, was implanted in 1982. It was developed to perform the function of live tissues.
