REFLEX ACTION

A reflex action is simple, automatic, involuntary and rapid response to a stimulus, which normally, involves only the spinal cord viz. a knee jerk, blinking of eyes, moving our foot away from something sharp or withdrawing our hand on touching a hot object.

Sometimes, instead of the spinal cord, brain is involved in the reflex action. Such reflexes are known as cerebral (brain) reflexes, e.g., contraction of pupil of the eye in the presence of bright light.
